Shakti Kapoor…you may remember this 6 feet tall actor as a comedian or villain, but one thing is for sure, you can’t ignore his presence in Bollywood. After acting in more than 400 films (and counting), his name is one that every movie-watcher knows for sure!
Personal life:
Shakti Kapoor was born on 3rd September, 1958. Not much is known about his personal life, except that he is married to Bollywood actor Padmini Kolhapure’s sister, Shivangi. He has 2 children: Siddhant Kapoor (a DJ and assistant Director) and Shraddha Kapoor (actor).
Major Films:
Shakti Kapoor’s first film came in 1975: Do Jasoos, followed by Sangram in 1976. After acting in 1 film per year at the start of his career, he began doing many more in the same time frame, sometimes upto 20 a year! Though he has worked in so many films, it is obvious that most of them weren’t box office toppers.
Late Feroz Khan’s Qurbani (1980) was one of Shakti’s bigger hits, starring biggies like Feroz Khan himself, Vinod Khanna, Zeenat Aman and Amjad Khan. Satte Pe Satta (1982) saw him in a comic role. The film also starred Amitabh Bachchan and was a hit.
Dance Dance (1987) saw him playing a negative role. His portrayal of the evil yet stupid Balma in Chaalbaaz (1989) won him a lot of accolades.
The first of the “Khiladi” series, Khiladi (1992) saw him play a cop. This Akshay Kumar starrer was a hit, though Shakti Kapoor had a small role.
In 1994 came Raja Babu, the film that gave Shakti Kapoor a Filmfare Award for best comedian. As Nandu, Govinda’s side-kick, he excelled as a cheapster, but loyal friend.
Then came Andaz Apna Apna (1994). This Rajkumar Santoshi comedy had everyone in splits. And Shakti Kapoor as “Crime Master Gogo” has become an unforgettable character.
In Main Khiladi Tu Anari (1994) he plays a ruthless gangster Goli. Not a very memorable role, but the film did well.
Coolie No 1 (1995) added another feather in his crown, so did the success of Judwaa (1997).
His other successes include the family drama Hum Saath Saath Hain (1999), Zubeidaa (2001), Hungama (2003) and Bhagam Bhaag (2006)
In 2009 he has appeared in the comedy film Kisse Pyaar Karoon. He has a handful of films scheduled to release this year: Tara Sitara, Naughty at 40, Mr Bhatti on Chutti, Chatur Singh Two Star, Ten Patti and Don’t worry.
Murky Controversy:
Shakti Kapoor was caught in an apparent sting operation, showing him asking for sexual favors from a female reporter posing as an aspiring actor. This video seemed like proof of the existence of the fabled casting couch in the film industry. However, the charges leveled against him were cleared as there was no substantial proof that it was indeed him in the video.
