Anil Kapoor, known for his trademark moustache, has been a part of Bollywood for thirty years now. His crest of success rose highest in the eighties. He’s also a producer and is the director of Asian Academy of Film and Television, Film City Noida.
A dream in his eyes
Kapoor was born on the 24th December 1959 in Chembur to Surinder and Nirmal. The former was actor Shammi Kapoor’s secretary who went on to produce films. His brother is well known producer Boney Kapoor married to actress Sridevi. His younger brother Sanjay Kapoor is also an actor. His sister’s husband is Sandeep Marwah of the Marwah Films and Video Studios.
Kapoor as a child, a film buff that he was, got a chance to act in a Shammi Kapoor starrer Tu Payal Mein Geet, which never saw light.
He studied at the Our Lady Of Perpetual Succor School and later joined Xavier College which he left mid-way as he was not inclined to attend classes. Soon he enrolled in Roshan Taneja’s Acting School and has been going strong since.
He married Sunitha Bhambhani in 1984 and has three children – Sonam, Rhea and Harsh. His oldest daughter Sonam Kapoor made her debut with Saawariya in 2007. His wife Sunitha is a model turned jewelry designer.
Living his dream
1979 to 1985
Kapoor made his debut with Hamare Tumhaare as a supporting actor in 1979. He also made a brief appearance in Hum Paanch and Shakti. In 1983, he bagged a leading role in a Kannada film Pallavi Anu Pallavi which was the directorial debut of Mani Rathnam. He also played the lead actor in Woh Saat Din, a film produced by his father and which starred Padmini Kolhapuri and Naseeruddin Shah. Yash Chopra’s Maashal in 1984, which starred the likes of Dilip Kumar and Waheeda Rehman, won Kapoor the Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award. He received a nomination for the Filmfare Best Actor Award for his role Arun Verma in Subash Ghai’s Meri Jung released in 1985.
1986 to 1991
He appeared in the comedy Chameli Ki Shaadi and Karma in 1986. In 1987 he played his most popular role as Mr.India alias Arun Verma in the hit Shekar Kapur’s Mr.India with Sridevi. The 1988 release Tezaab with Madhuri Dixit was yet another hit on his list. Ram Lakhan and Parinda were two of his biggest hits in 1989. The latter, a film about the underworld, won several awards and was also an entry to the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. In 1990, he saw a commercial success in Kishen Kanhaiya in which he played a double role. In 1991, it was Lamhe about a man in love with an older woman which received critical acclaim but didn’t fare well commercially.
1992 to 1997
His blockbuster in 1992 came in the form of Beta with Madhuri Dixit. The film won him a second Filmfare Best Actor Award. Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja in 1993 failed at the box office. The 1994 film, 1947 A Love Story, set during British rule, in which he played Naren Singh, won several awards. Virasat in 1997 with Tabu and Pooja Batra was a remake of the Tamil hit Thevar Magan. Kapoor won the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Performance.
1998 to 2003
In 1999, his fans saw him in a comic role as Lakhan in David Dhawan’s Biwi No.1. The same year he won the Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award for his role as the music director Vikrant Kapoor in Subash Ghai’s Taal. In 2000, a film about terrorists and betrayal, Rajkumar Santoshi’s Pukar, had Kapoor playing an army man Major Jaidev Rajvansh, resulting in a National Film Award for Best Actor. In 2001, he played the part of a thief in the hit Lajja. The films that followed were average performers like Badhai Ho Badhai (which he produced), Om Jai Jagdish and Armaan.
2004 to 2009
In No Entry in 2005, he played funny man Kishen reluctant to have an extra-marital affair. In 2007, Welcome had a good run. He produced Gandhi, My Father which was about the relationship between Mahatma Gandhi and his son. His role as the eccentric police investigator Robert D’Costa in the 2008 release Race was appreciated and the film was a big hit. Tashan, released the same year failed. In Yuvvraj, he plays Gyanesh Yuvvraj, a genius of sorts indifferent to wealth. The film opened to mixed reviews. He plays the game show host in Slumdog Millionaire, a rags to riches story, based on the book Q&A by Vikas Swarup. The response to the film was positive.
